Proactively Protecting the Environment

At Aris Mining, we’re committed to protecting the environment by proactively managing operational risks and targeted investments that improve air and water quality, reduce emissions, and support biodiversity. Our environmental management systems are designed to reduce impacts while supporting sustainable community development, and are informed by internationally recognized sustainability frameworks, including Towards Sustainable Mining, the OECD Due Diligence Guidance, and the advanced implementation of the Escazú Agreement.

Since August 2012, we have participated in the UNIDO Global Mercury Project, an initiative aimed at reducing mercury contamination from artisanal and small-scale gold mining. In Segovia, Antioquia, this work is reinforced by the collaborative implementation of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, supporting cleaner technologies, miner training, and environmental restoration in line with Colombia’s international commitments.

Our Flagship Environmental Initiatives

Our commitment to environmental sustainability includes the following initiatives:

Renewable Energy at Segovia

Segovia’s electricity is sourced entirely from renewable energy, combining power from our 8.5 MW Doña Teresa Small Hydropower Plant with renewable grid power. Together, these sources help avoid approximately 3,800 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

El Colibrí Solar Park at Segovia

Our first self-consumption solar park has 2.1 MWp of installed capacity and is expected to generate approximately 3.4 GWh of clean energy annually, replacing nearly 7% of El Silencio mine’s electricity consumption. Built on the already partially reclaimed El Colibrí tailings storage facility, the project also demonstrates the sustainable reuse of mining infrastructure.

Water Management at Segovia

We are investing in innovative water management systems that increase water reuse and reduce freshwater withdrawals. Our STARI plant recirculates approximately 85% of treated water back into production, while our filter press removes more than 2 million m³ of water from mine tailings to be recirculated each month.

Environmental Management at Marmato

Responsible water and waste management are embedded throughout the operation, including the use of water treatment plants and recirculating water at the flotation plant, alongside responsible tailings and waste management.

Responsible Development at Soto Norte

Soto Norte has been redesigned to balance scale, profitability, environmental stewardship, and community considerations. The project is located entirely outside the Santurbán Páramo and its buffer zone, will reuse 96.5% of its water, and dedicates more than 20% of total processing capacity (750 tpd) to material mined by local community groups, providing access to safe, licensed processing and supporting improved water quality in local mining areas.
